What Is Concussion Therapy?
Concussion therapy in West Hartford, Glastonbury or Granby, CT is a highly useful tool in supporting recovery from a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Our Physical Therapists are certified in Complete Concussion Management (CCMI), which entails the most effective treatment for concussions based on the latest evidence. During concussion therapy, the physical therapist will evaluate the severity of the concussion, educate the patient or athlete, and provide strategies that can reduce discomfort, alleviate painful symptoms, and improve brain functionality.

How Can Concussion Therapy Help?
Acute and chronic concussions create a cascade of irregularities in the body. More often than not, patients and athletes are told to rest after a concussion. This does not promote healing. Following a concussion, our trained physical therapists evaluate the limitations a concussion creates such as cervical movement impairments, vestibular dysfunction, blood flow autoregulation impairments, and sleep or diet disturbances. Balancing and improving these irregularities will allow for optimal healing.

What Does Concussion Therapy Look Like?
In conjunction with orthopedic manual physical therapy, additional strategies using vestibular rehabilitation, endurance/heart rate training, and specific education help reduce headaches and nausea following a concussion. Typically, a concussion creates cervical and vestibular dysfunction which create lightheadedness, loss of balance, and neck pain. To alleviate these impairments, your physical therapist will introduce you to specialized activities, including fixing your gaze at a certain point in the distance, or using simple movements to stabilize your core and limbs. With proper guidance these strategies can be incredibly helpful in improving quality of life as you recover from a concussion.
